Empowering our community to advocate for and resettle LGBTQ+ refugees of East Africa in the U.S.A.

Engage.

Advocate.

Connect.

We are on a mission to ENGAGE, ADVOCATE, and CONNECT.

We ENGAGE with the LGBTQ+ refugees in East Africa.

We ADVOCATE with our national and international partners for better and inclusive treatment of these refugees.

We CONNECT with local resettlement initiatives to sponsor these refugees.

Our Vision

We support LGBTQ+ refugees from East Africa, engaging in shared advocacy and resettling them in Washington, DC and the wider United States.

Please consider how you and your found family here in the DMV can partner with us to make our vision a reality.

The inspiring example of the former residents of Block 13, their tragic treatment by some and the utter failure of others, is the most illustrative example of what drives the mission of And You Welcomed Me.

Our Team

We are putting together a team of local leaders to work day-to-day with us on this effort. Together we will engage the local queer community, informing groups about needs and possibilities, recruiting groups of friends to become refugee sponsors, and fundraising to support both refugees and their sponsors. Having a core group of committed individuals is vital to making our mission a success.

“The LGBTQIA people of Block 13 deserve a chance to live full and joyful lives. They deserve to live in safety, in a place where they can thrive, learn, work, and love, without fear. The world owes these people. They have done nothing wrong. In fact, they have already shown remarkable courage by being who they are. Their courage should be rewarded, not punished. They are already brave and heroic.”
